Winter School “Deep-sea Mineral Deposits: from Biogeochemistry to Geopolitics”

L’evento vuole fornire una panoramica sui giacimenti minerari in acque profonde (noduli polimetallici, croste ricche di cobalto, solfuri idrotermali), sull’attività microbica associata (in analogia con le prove delle prima forme di vita sulla Terra), sulle tecniche analitiche d’indagine (spettroscopia Raman e tecniche con luce di Sincrotrone), così come su aspetti ambientali, economici e geopolitici legati all’estrazione mineraria in mare profondo.
La Winter School è organizzata dai colleghi dell’Università di San Paolo (USP) del Brasile, con cui l’Università di Trieste ha stipulato un Protocollo d’Intesa (MoU), e rientra nell’ambito delle attività proposte nel Protocollo Esecutivo fra l’Istituto Oceanografico della USP (ref. Prof. Christian Millo) ed il MIGe di UniTS (ref. Prof. Stefano Covelli). L’evento è patrocinato dalla So.Ge.I., la Società Geochimica Italiana.
I docenti relatori sono il Prof. Dr. Christian Millo, geochimico (Oceanographic Institute, University of São Paulo, Brazil) e il Prof. Dr. Douglas Galante, astrobiologo (Institute of Geosciences, University of São Paulo, Brazil).
La Winter School è indirizzata a studenti, dottorandi, tecnici di laboratorio, ricercatori e docenti interessati ad ampliare le conoscenze sulla tematica quanto mai attuale, vista la crescente domanda di Materie Prime Critiche per la transizione energetica e digitale.

Winter School “Deep-sea Mineral Deposits: from Biogeochemistry to Geopolitics”
University of Trieste from Monday 19th to Friday 23rd January 2026
The event aims to provide an overview of deep-sea mineral deposits (polymetallic nodules, cobalt-rich crusts, hydrothermal sulphides), the associated microbial activity (in analogy with evidence of the first life forms on Earth), analytical investigation techniques (Raman spectroscopy and Synchrotron light-based techniques), as well as environmental, economic and geopolitical aspects related to deep-sea mining.
The Winter School is organised by our colleagues from the University of São Paulo (USP) in Brazil, with which the University of Trieste has recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding. The initiative stems from the Executive Protocol between the Oceanographic Institute of USP (ref. Prof. Christian Millo) and the MIGe of UniTS (ref. Prof. Stefano Covelli). The event is supported by So.Ge.I., the Italian Geochemistry Society.
The lecturers are Prof. Dr. Christian Millo, geochemist (Oceanographic Institute, University of São Paulo, Brazil) and Prof. Dr. Douglas Galante, astrobiologist (Institute of Geosciences, University of São Paulo, Brazil).
The Winter School is open to undergraduate students, PhD students, technicians, junior and senior researchers interested in expanding their knowledge on this highly topical issue, given the growing demand for Critical Raw Materials for the energy and digital transition.
